Rome: Portico of Octavia, interior (1760 etching)

Rome: Interior of the Portico of Octavia (Piranesi 1760)

The portico of Octavia, whose interior or atrium is shown in this drawing by Piranesi, was built by Augustus for his niece Octavia. There is an inscription on the front pediment. Originally there were columns, but after a 5th century AD earthquake, arches were installed.

By the middle ages the portico was used as a fish market in the the Jewish quarter or ghetto.
