Rome: Palatine Hill, Severan Palace (drawing 1530s)

Rome: Palatine Hill, Severan Palace (van Heemskerck 1532-7)

This is one of a series of drawings of ancient Roman ruins made by the Dutch artist Martin van Heemskerck in the 1530s.

In the foreground are massive brick and stone vaults and wall fragments of the Severan Palace, at the top of the Palatine Hill. In the background, at right, is a distant view of the Colosseum, located at the southern end of the Roman Forum below the Palatine.
