Augustus bought his first house on the Palatine Hill in 44 BC from an orator named Hortensius. After becoming emperor in 28 BC, he made the hilltop into a huge palace complex. After the fire of Nero, the Palace of the Caesars was rebuilt by Domitian. Ths photo shows the north side of the  Domus Augustus with its several surviving vaulted rooms.

The Palace complex contained temples of Vesta and Apollo; the latter burned down in AD 363. Little therafter is known until early 16th century researchers and architects such as Palladio began to study the ruins.
