Rome: Forum of Augustus, Temple Mars Ultor (etching 1820)

Rome: Forum of Augustus, Temple of Mars Ultor (Rossini 1820)

Remains of this large temple in the Forum of Augustus, shown in this 1820 drawing by Rossini, include three columns from the right side. By this date, the area had been excavated  to reveal the full height of the columns. (This image may be compared with the 1747 drawing by Piranesi, executed when ground level was still several meters higher).

Originally, the Temple of Mars Ultor had columns on 3 sides, a large pronaos, and an apsidal cella or interior sanctuary. It was used by the ancient Romans as a museum of art and war trophies.
