Rome: Forma Urbis Roma, plan of Ludus Magnus (gladiator school)

Rome: Forma Urbis Roma, plan of gladiator school (Vatican Mus.)

At left is a fragment from the ancient marble map of Rome called Forma Urbis Roma, made in about.AD 200, showing part of a plan of the Ludus Magnus or gladiator school. Today the Forma Urbis Roma survives only in fragments.

At right is a Renaissance copy of the same, made while the map section was still intact, from Vatican Codex 3439, fol.135,Table 17.

The Ludus Magnus was a school for gladiators located right beside the Colosseum, and connected with it by underground passage. It had a small practice arena and dormitories, of which some excavated parts are visible.
