Rome: Domus Aurea (1756 etching)

Rome: The Domus Aurea (Piranesi 1756)

The vast Domus Aurea (Golden House) was built by the Emperor Nero in AD 64-68 after the Great Fire of AD 64, when Nero erected his luxurious new palace complex with lakes, forests, and vineyards.

This 1756 drawing by Piranesi shows portions of the Domus Area known at that time, when it was partly overlaid by the Baths of Trajan and Titus.
