Rome: Forum, Curia (1550s drawing)

Rome: Forum, Curia, Church of S. Adrian (Ligorio 1550s; Middleton 1888 fg.2)

The Church of S. Adrian in the northeast side of the Forum is probably the ancient Curia or Senate House, It was rebuilt by Diocletian in the late 3rd century AD. Now much altered, it was much nearer its original state when Ligorio drew this plan and section in about 1550.

Pirro Ligorio (1512-1583) was both architect and archaeologist, who supervised antiquities in Rome and excavated at Tivoli. This drawing is from a collection in the Bodleian Library at Oxford (Canonici Ms138).
