Rome: Colosseum interior with subterranean structures Ultor (Rossini 1820)

This drawing by Rossini shows the subterranean complex of rooms beneath the floor of the Colosseum arena. These rooms contained a variety of stage props as well as gladiator rooms, and cages of the animals used in the spectacles

The underground rooms had first been exposed by Carlo Fea and others in the 1810-1820 period. Later they were reburied, and not exposed again until about 1900.
