Rome: Colosseum exterior with elevation (1515 drawing)

Rome: Drawing of the Colosseum with elevation (Comer 1515; Ashby BSR 1902 fg.41)

The drawing at left, dated 1515, gives an external view of the four tiers of the Colosseum (labelled amphiteatri domitiani), with pilasters on the first 3 tiers being Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian, respectively. At right is a sectional elevation of the same.

The drawings are attributed to Andreas Comer, a German cleric from Bamberg who died in Rome in 1527. His drawings, at the John Soane Collection in London, were published by Thomas Ashby of the British School at Rome.
