Rome: Colosseum overhead view (etching 1756)

Rome: The Colosseum viewed overhead (Piranesi 1766)

This drawing by Piranesi shows an overhead view of the colosseum in the mid-18th century, before major restorations that commenced at the start of the 19th century. The view includes notation of the stations of the cross in the center of the interior, making this a pilgrimage spot.

Between 1810 and 1820, the interior of the colosseum was first excavated, revealing subterranean rooms. After being covered over again, the subterranean rooms were permanently exposed ca.1900.
