Rome: Baths of Trajan and Titus, plan (1756 etching)

Rome: Plan of the Baths of Trajan and Titus (Piranesi 1756)

The Baths of Titus and Trajan were both erected between AD 80-104 over the Domus Aurea, Nero's former palace which had been  built in AD 64-68. In this early plan by Piranesi, the layout is accurately shown although some information was lacking. The large central bath is now identified as that of Trajan.

The separate structure at lower left which Piranesi called the Tepidarium was actually the Sette Sale reservoir built for the Domus Aurea, and later reused by the baths.
