Rome: Baths of Trajan and Domus Aurea (1756 etching)

Rome: The Baths of Trajan and Domus Aurea (Piranesi 1756)

The vast Domus Aurea (Golden House) was built by the Emperor Nero in AD 64-68. Soon afterwards part of it was built over by the Baths of Trajan and Titus.

This detail of a larger 1756 drawing by Piranesi shows a corner section of the Baths of Trajan (labelled B) with an exposed portion of the underlying Domus Aurea revealed.
