Rome: Baths of Diocletian, tepidarium (1651 etching)

Rome: The Baths of Diocletian, tepidarium (Hollar 1651)

The Baths were built by Diocletian and Maximius in AD 306. This drawing by Hollar shows the tepidarium of the Baths of Diocletian as it was before it was converted into the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Between 1563 and 1564, Michaelangelo converted the great domed hall into a Greek cross.

The artist, Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) was born in Prague. He published a number of architectural drawings from various sites.
