Rome: Baths of Diocletian (1651 etching)

Rome: The Baths of Diocletian (Hollar 1651)

The Baths, originally built by Diocletian and Maximius in AD 306, were gradually despoiled of their marble elements by the 16th century. When this drawing was made in 1651, the site was used as garden, the Horti Belleiani, owned by Jean de Bellay, French ambassador of Francis I.

The artist, Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677), born in Prague, published many architectural drawings as etchings.
