Rome: Basilica of Maxentius (1760s drawing)

Rome: Basilica of Maxentius in the Forum (Piranesi 1760-1778)

This drawing of the Basilica of Maxentius in the 1760s, typically accurate for Piranesi, shows the huge vaulted chambers of the early 4th century basilica begun by the emperor Maxentius, and  finished by his successor Constantine the Great. The 18th century ground level then filled about half of its height.

The goatherd shown in this detail was a frequent user of the Forum pasture at that time.
