Rome: Forum, Basilica of Maxentius and Domus Aurea (1550s drawing)

Rome: Forum, Basilica of Maxentius and Domus Aurea (Ligorio 1550s; Middleton 1888 fg.8)

This drawing from about 1550 shows two large structures, the Basilica of Maxentius at left (A; also called basilica of Constantine), and a portion of the underlying Domus Area or Golden House, built by Nero (B).

This part of the Golden House has a wide staircase leading up to a peristyle and courtyard.

Pirro Ligorio (1512-1583) was both architect and archaeologist, who supervised antiquities in Rome and excavated at Tivoli. This drawing is from a collection in the Bodleian Library at Oxford (Canonici Ms138).
