Rome: The Arch of Titus with inscription (2001 photo)

Arch of Titus with inscription (photo: Athena Review 2001).

The arch of Titus was built by Domiitian to honor the campaigns in Judea by Titus and Vespacian. The single arch has marble columns and two large reliefs, one of Roma and Victory marching on Jerusalem in AD 70; the second, the return with spoils of war

The Latin inscription reads: "SENATUS POPULUS QUE ROMANUS DIVO TITO DIVI VESPASIANI E VESPASIANO AUGUSTO.".

In the Middle Ages, the arch was incorporated into a house of the Frangipani family, which was finally removed in 1821. The Arch was then restored by Guiseppe Valadier.
