Rome: Forum, Arch of Septimius Severus (1860 photo)

Pompeii: The Arch of Septimius Severus (Anderson Archive, 1860)

The view in this 1860 albumen print of the Severan Arch by James Anderson may be compared with one taken 10 years earlier by Flacheron, when the ground level of the still unexcavated Forum was 4-5 m higher. Archaeological work began in the Forum in the intervening decade. This image also shows two columns of the Temple of Concordia.

The Arch was erected in AD 203 by the emperor Septimius Severus, to commemorate recent victories in wars against the Parthians,  led by his sons  Caracalla and Geta.
