Rome: Forum, Arch of Septimius Severus (1850 photo)

Pompeii: The Arch of Septimius Severus (photo: Flacheron Archive 1850)

When this image was made in 1850 by Frederick Flacheron, the ground surface of the Forum was about 4-6 meters above the ancient ground level during the Roman Empire. The early 3rd century AD arch of Septimius Severus, shown here in this calotype, had been buried about up to its midpoint.

This is about the same condition as when Canaletto painted the arch over a century earlier, in 1742. The arch when fully exposed is 68 feet high. By 1860, most of it had been uncovered.
