Rome: Forum, Arch of Septimius Severus reliefs (2001 photo)

Rome: The Arch of Septimius Severus.Parthains (photo: Athena Review 2001)

The Arch was erected in AD 203 by the emperor Septimius Severus, to commemorate recent victories in wars against the Parthians, led by his sons  Caracalla and Geta.

Four large reliefs on the arch depict the two campaigns in Parthia (Iran) by Caracalla and Geta. At the bases of the columns, such as shown here, are reliefs of captive barbarians.

In small friezes there are also oriental personages paying homage to Rome.
