Rome: Castellum on Aqueduct V (Simelli 1864-6, BSR Parker Archive)


This 1864-6 albumen print by Carlo Simelli shows the aqua castellum,used for water redistribution, of Aqueduct V. This was rebuilt in the reign of Alexander Severus in ca AD 225, and may also have served as a nymphaeum or fountain.

This castellum was also reportedly used as a storage place for war trophies of Marius. by then over 250 years old.
