Rome: Amphitheater of Castrense with parts labelled (Piranesi 1756)


In this 1756 drawing by Piranesi, the arches of the lower floor of the amphitheater (A) are shown embedded in the Aurelian Wall (D). Traces of the original second floor of the theater (B) are seen at left, replaced by a modern wall (C).

On top of the structure is the Church of S. Croce en Gerusalemme (E).
