Ostia:Republican sacred area, relief of Hercules

Ostia: Relief of Hercules in Republican sacred area (photo: Athena Review 2001)

This votive relief in the Republican sacred area, 71 cm high, shows three scenes related to the cult of Hercules.

The inscription reads C. FVLVIVS SALVIS HARVSPEXS D(onum) D(edit), meaning "[this was] Dedicated by C. Fulvius Salvis, Haruspex [priest]."

The scene at right shows six fishermen with a net, pulling a ship and a statue of Hercules, holding a scroll. At center Hercules hands the scroll to a priest in a toga, with a small winged figure of Victory at upper left.
