Ostia: Plan of the Republican Sacred Area

Ostia: Plan of the Republican sacred area (Athena Review Image Archive)

This plan shows the Republican sacred temple area at the center of Ostia (Regio I, insula 15), which was excavated in the 1930s.

North of the via della Foce are three temples from the Republican era. Both the Temple of Hercules, and the Tetrastyle Temple (possibly dedicated to Hygeia) date from the late 2nd century BC. During the Empire, four altars were added by the Temple of Hercules stairs.

The dedication of the small Temple of the Round Altar at lower left has not yet been identified.
