Ostia: House of Diana, plan

Ostia: House of Diana plan (Athena Review Image Archive)

This plan shows the ground floor of the 2nd century AD House of Diana, located in a central part of Ostia. The ground floor was comprised mainly of shops and a central atrium or courtyard with a fountain. Notably, in its northwest corner it also contained a Mithraeum or temple of Mithras, one of several in Ostia, representing a religion imported from the Near East which appealed particularly to Roman legionary soldiers.

Built in the reign of Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161), the House of Diana contained several upper stories, of which only the 2nd story remains. These rooms held residences, some of which had painted murals.
