This drawing by the Italian archaeologist Rudolfo Lanciani shows the public granary (horrea) at Ostia. Within the brick walls of the granary, grain was stored in large-mouth pots called doliae.
Lanciani, who also did extensive work in ancient Rome in the 1860s-90s, conducted the first excavations at Ostia.
