Pompeii: Temple of Isis, fresco of naval battle 1

Pompeii: Temple of Isis, fresco of naval battle 1 (Mus.Arch Naples; photo: Athena Review)

The Temple of Isis, rebuilt between AD 62 and 79, contained numerus paintings in the 4th style.  These include fanciful landscapes with villas, temples, and exotic plants and animals. Another common theme was naval battles with triermes.

This 4th style painting from the Temple portrays a naval battle set amid an architectonic, screen- or curtain-like frame. The overall composition, placed on a deep red background, resembles a stage set. Beneath the painting of the naval battle is a standarized floral composition, apparently resting on moulding.
