Pompeii: Temple of Isis, altar at chapel

Pompeii: Temple of Isis altar at chapel (photo: Athena Review)

This image shows a chapel beside the Temple of Isis, lies to the right. The altar in the center of the image includes a stucco facade with the relief of a temple.

The columns leading up to the altar were made of brick covered with stucco, as is the entire temple when rebuilt after AD 62. Some of the columns were incised, as shown by the example at left. The temple exterior is also covered with both architectural and figurative stucco reliefs.
