Pompeii: Temple of Apollo, Statue of Apollo, front view

Pompeii: The Temple of Apollo, Statue of Apollo (photo: Athena Review)

It is known that the Temple was consecrated to the Greek deity Apollo, based on a dedication in Oscan by quaestor Oppius Campanus that was found in the cella. This image shows the statue of Apollo as an archer, viewed from the front.

Oscan was the language originally spoken in Pompeii, until the region was conquered by Sulla in ca. 80 BC.
