Pompeii: Thermapolium of Vetutius Placidus (photo: sop.arch.Pompeii)

The Thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus is located at regio I, insula 08, number 08.

The painted and stucco-relief lararium (aedicula) at the end of the bar, portrayed here, shows household gods (Lares and Penates) who watch over the house along with its guiding genius or spirit. The Lares (protectors of the house) are standing with arms raised on either side of the owners' Genius (at center), along with Mercury, the god of trade (at left) and Bacchus, the god of wine (at right) who are the guardian spirits of the tavern.

Two serpents below facing each other are benevolent tutelary spirits called agathodemons.
