Pompeii: drawing of labrum and inscription (Mazois, vol.3 1829)

This drawing by Mazois shows an inscription (CIL 10-00817) on the base of the labrum or cold water basin found in the calidarium of the Forum Baths at Pompeii. The text describes the public funding of the labrum for 5,250 sesterces. The Latin text (with many standard abbreviations) is as follows:

"Cn(aeo) Melissaeo Cn(aei) f(ilio) Apro M(arco) Staio M(arci) f(ilio) Rufo IIvir(is) iter(um) i(ure) d(icundo) labrum ex d(ecreto) d(ecurionum) ex p(ecunia) p(ublica) f(aciendum) c(uraverunt) constat HS V(milia)CCL."

The English translation is given below:

"Caius Mellisaeus Aprus son of Caius, Marcus Staius Rufus son of Marcus, as duumvirs here attest that this labrum by decree of the decurium was paid for by public funds totalling 5,250 sesterces."
