Pompeii: Macellum, Ulysses Fresco (photo: Athena Review 2003)

In the marketplace or Macellum next to the Forum are a number of fresco paintings in the 4th Style, which date from the 1st century AD.  The northwest wall has 4th style frescos with typical fantasy architectural elements alternating with panels of isolated figures, and paintings of mythological figures.

This painting from the northwest wall of the Macellum shows a scene from The Odyssey, portraying the recognition of Ulysses by Penelope.
