Pompeii: Macellum Fresco with mythological theme

Pompeii: Macellum, 4th style Fresco with mythological theme  (photo: Athena Review)

The city's main market, or Macellum, located next to the forum dates from the 2c BC and underwent subsequent renovations: the bases in front of the entrance portico held commemorative statues of illustrious citizens. The interior has a porticoed courtyard with fresco paintings.

Inthe northwest portico of the Macellum are a number of fresco paintings in the 4th Style, which dates from the 1st century AD and feature achitectural details combined with myths or fantasy landscapes.

In this example, a mythological scene is framed within a painted architectural portal.
