Pompeii: Macellum Fresco in 4th Style (photo: Athena Review)

In the marketplace next to the Forum are a number of fresco paintings. This example from the Macellum building is in the 4th Style, which dates from the 1st century AD and features achitectural details. In this example, these details include illusions of steep perspective, such as the effect of a window revealing a chariot driven by a winged nymph past a columned building.
