Pompeii: The Large Theater, seats around stage (VIII 7, 20)

Pompeii: Front row seats at the Large Theater (photo: Athena Review)

This view of the seats in the Large Theater shows four ledges at the front, which were privileged seats known as the ima cavea.  Members of the city council, called decurions, had the right to sit here on a seat of double width.

Above the arc of regular seats (here largely covered with grass) is the structure called the tribunal. The entrance arch to the theater is seen at left.
