Pompeii: Forum Baths, Men's Calidarium (photo: Athena Review)

The Men's Calidarium or hot bathing area was heated by steam circulating through double walls and a hollow floor, with a furnace below feeding hypocaust vents between the walls.

This image shows the vaulted apse of the men's calidarium, with a marble basin (labrum) used for cold plunge baths in the center, beneath skylights.
