Herculaneum: House of the Wooden Partition, atrium & tablinum (photo: Athena Review)

"This view across the atrium shows the wooden partition separating the atrium from the tablinum. Beyond, in the background, is the peristyle or garden area. The floor mosaic incorporates pebbles.

The floor of the atrium slopes slightly inward to the impluvium, and lacks columns. The ceiling is supported entirely by the rafters, a building method called atrium tuscanium or Tuscan atrium.
