Herculaneum: House of the Wooden Partition, 3rd style mural (photo: Athena Review)

The oecus (from Greek oikos for house or room) was a large room or salon sometimes used for banquets.

This third style painting on the upper wall of the oecus in the House of the Wooden Partition includes a wide band or arc on a red background, with architectural and marine motifs including dolphins and fanciful sea serpents.
