Herculaneum: House of Wooden Partition, atrium cartibulum

Herculaneum: House of Wooden Partition, cartibulum in atrium (photo: Athena Review)

The atrium of the House of the Wooden Partition, thought to date from the 1st century BC, has an inward sloping mosaic floor,  a feature of the Tuscan order of construction during the late Republican era.The marble-faced impluvium or rain-catching  pool had a central fountain.

Just east of the impluvium is a marble stand or display table (cartibulum), shown in this image. Similar tables, often decorated with lions, griffons, or other animals, have been found in Pompeii houses. This one has a small relief carving of a lion on one side.
