Herculaneum: House of Wooden Partition, tragic mask mural

Herculaneum: Tragic mask at the House of the Wooden Partition (photo: Athena Review)

While most of this mural panel in the House of the Wooden Partition has been effaced, a painted Graeco-Roman tragic mask (oscillum) is preserved. This is similar to masks from the Temple of Isis in Pompeii, representing Dionysius or Osirus (now in the Naples Museum).

A sculpture of a similar tragic mask also occurs at Herculaneum in the House of Neptune and Amphitrite
