Herculaneum: House of the Genius, portal area

Herculaneum: House of the Genius, portal area (photo: Athena Review)

The House of the Genius, like other houses in Herculaneum, was constructed of brick and stone. Much of the underlying masonry was then covered over with decorated stucco, including both walls and columns.

Masonry in this image includes opus reticulatum, with diamond-shaped bricks in diagonal courses, used in archways and facades; and opus mixtum, alternating courses of brick and stone. Both were very widely used.
