Herculaneum: House of Argos portal

Herculaneum: portal of the House of Argos (photo: Athena Review)

The portal used now for the House of Argos, seen here, is on the West side of Cardo III. Originally, this was a side gate (posticum). The main entrance has not yet been excavated. In their 18th century probings, the Bourbons removed a wall shared with the House of Aristides.

The House of Argos derives its name from an inscription, Io et Argo, found in a reception room that opened onto the large peristyle. It may have described mural paintings, now disappeared.
