Herculaneum: Boathouses, detail

Herculaneum: Boasthouses, detail of front (photo: Athena Review)

Five of the twelve vaulted chambers called boathouses are shown here. Each is about 100 sq feet in area. Skeletal remains show that at least 300 persons tried to take refuge here to save themselves when Vesuvius erupted in August, AD 79.

The beach of the Bay of Naples was then about at the viewpoint of this image.
