Herculaneum: House of the Skeleton, plan

Herculaneum:  Plan of the House of the Skeleton (Athena Review Image Archive)

The House of the Skeleton in Insula 2 is named for the first skeleton found in Herculaneum in 1831. Originally it was assumed that most residents of the town survived. Since the 1970s, however, hundreds of skeletons have been found in refuges such as boathouses.

The House of the Skeleton is one of the larger residences in Herculaneum, preserving a number of mural paintings in the 3rd style (early 1st century AD) as well as mosaics.
