Herculaneum: House of the Skeleton, lararium

Herculaneum: Mosaic lararium at House of the Skeleton (photo: Athena Review)

A small courtyard near the triclinium of the House of the Skeleton contains a mural painting and a shrine or lararium with bright mosaic decoration. Among the interesting features are actual seashells attached to the lower front of the shrine.

Other examples of marine motifs in mosaics at Herculaneum are the apse of the nymphaeum, in the same House of the Skeleton; and the floor mosaic of a triton and dolphins in the Central Thermae.
