Herculaneum: House of the Skeleton courtyard mural

Herculaneum: House of the Skeleton, mural in courtyard shrine (photo: Athena Review)

Near the south wall of the triclinium in the House of the Skeleton is a small courtyard containing a mosaic shrine or lararium, and a mural with a lyrical outdoor scene. This painting of the Third Style shows a garden with birds and fruit.

Hanging in the center is a round object, possibly a shield, with the head of a warrior painted on it, suggesting it may be a memorial image.

Similar motifs occur on frescos from a villa in nearby Boscoreale, another town buried by Vesuvius in AD 79.
