Herculaneum: House of the Skeleton, mural detail

Herculaneum: House of the Skeleton, triclinium mural detail (photo: Athena Review)

This detail shows a variant of the Third style of painting, which prevailed in Herculaneum and Pompeii in the early to mid 1st century AD. The style features illusionistic architectural motifs.

In this example from the triclinium of the House of the Skeleton, a laticework or trellis with tiny figures on it encloses a large candelabra-like motif.
