Herculaneum: House of the Skeleton, nymphaeum apse

Herculaneum: Apse in nymphaeum at House of the Skeleton (photo: Athena Review)

The nymphaeum, consisting of an apse between two rectangular pools, is located at the north side of the atrium of the House of the Skeleton.

The mosaic decoration of the apse includes marine motifs such as sea shells, as well as candelabra and other typical motifs of the 3rd style of painting, seen in murals within the house.
