Herculaneum: House of Argos excedra with mural

Herculaneum: 4th style painting in excedra of House of Argos (photo: Athena Review)

This painting of an imaginary scene is on the north wall of the excedra of the House of Argos. It shows a small temple within a mythological landscape that includes fantasy architecture in the right background, typical of the 4th style of painting, often found in mid-1st century houses. Similar scenes also occur in Pompeii houses.

In the entrance hall, the names  Io and Argo were written on the wall, so the myth of Argos has been assumed to be a theme of some paintings, although these are missing.
