Herculaneum: House of Argos excedra murals

Herculaneum: Murals in the excedra of the House of Argos (photo: Athena Review)

The excedra of the House of Argos is near the entrance on the east side. Its walls are painted in the 4th style, with architectural motifs framed with red panels. The murals are painted on plaster, covering brick walls set in opus reticulatum, using diamond-shaped bricks.

The central panel on each wall contains a mythological scene. Some paintings, now vanished, may have represented the Myth of Argos, for which the house was named.
